A Note From Gracie

“I am very excited about this opportunity and being able to share it with other children!”

About the Exhibit

In an effort to continue building artistic bridges throughout the community, the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center held its second iteration of “A Space of Our Own” in September 2020. During this exhibition, guest curator Anthony Wardrett and select artists displayed their incredibly diverse artworks created during our Open Studio Sessions. Throughout the exhibition, the public voted for their favorite pieces and one of the top finishers, 8-year-old Gracie Eriks, was chosen as the winner of the solo exhibition prize. Instead of just displaying her artwork, Gracie wants to share this experience with kids all across Hampton Roads. Thus, we present to you “FUN!” (Finding Urself Now)- an exhibition featuring youth artists who use art as a vehicle of joy, exploration, and expression.

Call For Artists

We are no longer accepting submissions for this exhibit.

The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is looking for youth visual artists aged 17 & under to display in our June 2021 exhibition, FUN! (Finding Urself Now). This exhibition calls for artwork created by children and teens who use art as a vehicle of joy, exploration, and expression. This is an opportunity wherein young artists are afforded the chance to display in a professional gallery, and to be featured on our website and social media pages. FUN! will be guest curated by one of the top finishers of our September 2020 exhibition “A Space of Our Own”, Gracie Eriks.

Submission Details and Criteria

Artists (and parents or guardians) should submit hi-resolution samples of their artwork as email attachments (.jpg or .png, 150dpi recommended) to downing-gross@nnva.gov. The subject line of your email should read “FUN! Submission”. In the message area, please include the parent or guardian’s first and last name, the youth artist’s first and last name, age, date of birth, address, contact phone number, and titles of your work (if applicable). These samples do not have to be the pieces that will be submitted for the show. They are to get an indication of the artist’s work.

Final Artwork Criteria Once Accepted: Artists’ final pieces must be display ready. Works should not be damaged or stained. All media is allowed, including works on canvas, paper, printed photography, mixed media, and sculpture. We recommend that works on paper and photographs be framed. We do have a wire hanging system, thus 2D works should come ready for hanging with wire. All subjects are allowed (no lewd imagery). Original artwork only; no prints or reproductions of paintings will be considered. 2D works must not exceed 48in in size on all sides. 3D works must be free standing or be able to fit on a 1ft x 1ft pedestal. Works must not exceed 60lbs.

If accepted, artists will have the option to pick up a 16inx20in canvas with which to create their final piece, while supplies last.

If in need of a studio to create in, sign-up for our Open Studio Sessions here: http://downinggross.org/open-studio

Delivery and Pickup: All artwork must be delivered to the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center ready to be installed. For example, two-dimensional artwork such as paintings and photographs must be delivered ready for hanging with wire. Works should be identified by name on the back or base. During the period of exhibition, the works may not be removed. All artwork must be picked up or sent back to the lender within 30 days after the exhibition period. Deadline for delivery: June 4, 2021, 6pm.

Please note: DGCAC reserves the right to refuse artworks that do not meet installation requirements or are otherwise judged unsuitable even after the delivery of works.

Shipped Artwork: Shipped work must be in reusable packaging and must include prepaid return shipping labels.
